Who must comply

Any business that places household packaging on the French market — including a non-French seller or their importer — falls under France's packaging EPR, framed by the Environmental Code and the anti-waste law (Loi AGEC).

The steps

  • Obtain a unique identifier (Identifiant Unique, IDU) from ADEME's SYDEREP register. Marketplaces are required to check it, and it evidences that you are registered.
  • Contract with an approved eco-organisation — for household packaging this is typically Citeo (Adelphe for some sectors). They collect your fees and organise recycling.
  • Declare annually the packaging you placed on the market (units, materials, weights) and pay the eco-contribution, which is modulated by recyclability and can carry bonuses/penalties.

The Triman and Info-tri label

France mandates the Triman logo together with the Info-tri sorting instructions on in-scope packaging, telling consumers how to separate and dispose of each component. This is a national marking obligation that currently sits alongside the emerging harmonised EU labels — do not assume one replaces the other yet.

Confirm current scope, thresholds and label rules on the official ADEME/Citeo guidance before declaring.
