In force since 12 August 2026
From 12 August 2026, online marketplaces (such as Amazon, eBay and others) must verify a seller's packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) compliance before allowing that seller's listings. In practice, the marketplace will ask you for a valid EPR registration number for each market you sell into — and if you cannot supply one, your listings may be suspended or removed.
The requirement flows from the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2025/40, "PPWR") together with each member state's EPR scheme. The underlying principle is that any business placing packaged goods on an EU market is treated as a "producer" and must register with the national register and report — and pay for — the weight and material of its packaging through a national Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO).
Marketplace verification simply moves enforcement of this existing obligation to the point of listing. For sellers who are already registered, nothing new is required; sellers who are not yet registered should register now, as marketplaces can already require a valid EPR number before your listings go live. Regardless of where your company is based, the obligation follows the markets you sell into. The following sellers should pay particular attention:

From 12 August 2026, marketplaces must verify sellers' packaging EPR compliance before allowing listings. This is general information, not legal advice.
Marketplaces may suspend or remove your listings in the affected markets until you supply a valid EPR registration number. National authorities can also claim back-fees and issue penalties. Registering early avoids any interruption to your listings.
It applies to sellers placing packaged goods on EU markets, including non-EU sellers, sellers using Amazon FBA, and sellers on online marketplaces. Regardless of where your company is based, the obligation follows the markets you sell into.
